There are some wonderful places to visit in this area. Our land is surrounded on three sides by mountains. Travel south and west less than 20 miles and you can visit Cochise Stonghold. Click here to follow the link to Cochise Stonghold, a fabled area which was the hideout of the Chiricahua Apaches when pursued by the U.S. Cavalry. The legendary chief Cochise is buried somewhere in this natural granite fortress, though the location of his grave is unknown. In addition to its historical interest, the Stronghold affords many recreational activities such as camping, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding and birding. There is a $3 day use fee.

To the east, it is an easy drive to the Chiricahua National Monument. Follow this link to visit the Chiricahua National Monument online. It is called the "land of standing-up rocks" by the Apaches. The 12,000 acres of this national monument contain some of the most startling rock formations on earth. The product of a volcanic eruption some 27 million years ago, the rhyolite tuff has weathered into forms that make the area a photographer's paradise. The location of the monument--at the intersection of the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts and the southern Rocky Mountains and the northern Sierra Madre--makes it a favorite spot for naturalists and birders as well. Chiricahua plants and animals represent some of the greatest biological diversity in North America.

A third attraction nearby is the recently opened Kartchner Caverns State Park. Click here to visit the website for Kartchner Caverns. The cave was discovered in 1974, but it's existence became public knowledge only in 1988 when its purchase was approved as an Arizona State Park. Extraordinary precautions have been taken during its development to conserve the cave's near-pristine condition. All tours are guided by a trained tour guide. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling: (520)586-CAVE. The cave averages 68°F and 98% humidity year round. All cave trails are barrier-free. Due to wet surfaces and changes in grades, strollers and walkers are not allowed on the tours.
